Hi! My name is Tirta Pusma Ginting.
I have been working as a guide since 2018, and in December 2022 I founded Ecotourism Bukit Lawang with a strong commitment to protecting and preserving our jungle, its endangered orangutans, and the incredible wildlife that calls it home.
I am deeply passionate about helping others and contributing to a better future for the local community in Bukit Lawang. One of my biggest dreams is to open my own guesthouse one day, creating more job opportunities for my friends and family and supporting sustainable tourism in our village.
My team consists entirely of local people whom I trust and have worked with for many years. Together, we share the same values of respect for nature, wildlife protection, and authentic experiences.
Let me introduce them to you in the section below!
WHAT & WHERE IS BUKIT LAWANG?
Bukit Lawang is the name of a village situated in the west side of North Sumatra province and on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park. “Gunung” means “mountain”, “Bukit” means “hill” and “Lawang” means “door” or “gate”. Therefore, “Bukit Lawang” means The Hill which is the gateway to the mountain.
Mountain Leuser National Park
Bohorok is only a small part of the 830.628,95 hectares. Gunung Leuser National Park (commonly abbreviated TNGL) is one of the Nature Conservation Areas in Indonesia covering an area of 830.628,95 hectares which is administratively located in the Provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra. The Aceh Province is delineated by TNGL includes the Subulussalam, South Aceh, Aceh Singkil, Central Aceh, Gayo Lues, Bener Meriah, Aceh Tamiang regions, while the North Sumatra Province which is delineated has TNGL Regency includes Dairi, Karo, and Langkat.
This magnificent rain forest become famous throughout the world as it harbors some of the most endangered and rare species on earth for example Sumatran Rhinoceros and Orangutan and Raflesia, the largest flower in the world. The park is inhabited by animals like the Great Argus Pheasant, elephant, Sumatran tiger, and as many as seven species of primate, one of which is Siamang, which has an impressive, far-reaching vocal display.
The agile and pretty face Thomas Leaf-Monkey and long tailed macaques are also commonly seen. In total the park list 285 species of bird, 90 species of mammals, reptiles and 35 species of amphibians. The park contains some 3500 plant species and on each hectare of the lowland forest you can find amazing 60 trees species.
Geologically there are several limestone formations along the foothills of the mountains, some with beautiful caves long ago, these were coral reefs which have since been uplifted from the sea at rate of few millimeters per year by the process of colliding ocean floors and drifting continents. This infinitely slow process involves forces and has led to the formation of high mountains and volcanic zones.

Fantastic tour with so nice people!
This trek was the highlight of my trip to Indonesia, and one of the best wildlife experiences I have ever had, thanks to our amazing guide Tirta. We had fantastic looks at a family of Orangutans, as well as monkeys, bats, birds, and some beautiful jungle scenery. Tirta even managed to show me a Great Argus pheasant, a bird I have dreamed of seeing for years. I had a great picnic lunch and learned so much about the forest, the wildlife, and the history and culture of the area. I can’t wait to return to spend more time exploring this beautiful part of Sumatra..
